A Unique Confetti Idea

Introducing: The Oat Toss!

Now you might think this sounds crazy.

Porridge? Oatmeal? As confetti??

Hear me out. Flower confetti is expensive. You can make it yourself, but this takes a lot of time and still, a whole bouquet of flowers makes enough for maybe a few people? But oats? Oats are cheap. They don’t mark up the price for weddings, they’re cream colored to start or you can even dye them to look like whatever color is in your theme! No one else has heard of it, so it’s a unique idea. It’s biodegradable & safe for wildlife to eat. There really are no downsides!

As a wedding photographer, I’ve seen it all. Bird seed, flower petals, paper confetti, bubbles, tiny wood scroll flowers, sparklers. my god so many sparklers… but never oats. Using oats is a really unique confetti and a budget friendly wedding idea.

Here are 4 reasons why you should do an oat toss:

1. it’s cheap

2. it’s eco friendly

3. it’s customizable

4. it’s unique

It’s cheap

Oats are one of the cheapest things you could buy. I found a bag at Tesco for 78p. You could easily buy 3 bags and have well over enough for all of your guests for only £2.34. One bag of flower petals on amazon sells for £7-£20 for only 1 liter of flower petals, which is enough for about 12 guests. Buying real flowers and turning them into dried flowers is not only costly as well but also time consuming! Why spend so much money on something that will be literally tossed and thrown to the ground?

It’s Eco Friendly

Oats are an eco friendly confetti idea because they are safe for the sweet little critters to eat, and actually really good for them! Birds love them, squirrels, rabbits, ducks, etc. No matter what time of year, they have to eat, and they can’t very well eat flower petals can they? But they can eat oats!

If they don’t get to them though, they are biodegradable! They’re tiny, so it won’t look like a mess. They’ll wash away in the rain, or dissolve into the ground.

Good for the environment, good for your budget! A great eco friendly option for your wedding.

It’s customizable

I was lying in bed the other night unable to sleep so I decided to do a little experiment with my oats.

I dyed them. That’s right. It was actually very simple, with a little trial and error on water ratio.

You don’t want to use too much water otherwise it will make the oats soggy, you want just enough to mix the food coloring.

I was able to make purple, teal, orange, and pink! The color took to it great and if you wanted to mix them, you could have the rainbow! You’re really only limited to what kind of food coloring you can find! You can choose your wedding colors, match your bouquets, match your bridesmaids, or choose a color of a flower you might not be able to get with traditional petals.

Oats are such a unique confetti toss idea because you can make them imitate just about anything you want.

Here’s how it turned out!

It’s unique

I’ve only seen this once before when a photographer I follow back in the states posted about it last year. I thought to myself, wow that is an amazing idea. Oats as an alternative confetti toss! I kept pitching it to couples in America and they didn’t really seem to like the idea. (sparklers still have a strong hold on American weddings and I’m completely over them 😩)

However, YOU could be one of the trendsetters for this amazing new idea! An oat toss is so unique and different. It will give your guests a nice little surprise when we hand them out, or maybe a good laugh! Oats! A really different and unique confetti toss idea!

So that’s it! Using oats at your wedding is unique, budget friendly, eco friendly, and a completely customizable alternative to flower petal confetti!
