How To Not Feel Awkward In Photos

You are dying to book your family portrait session but the constant thought running through your head is, “why do I feel awkward taking pictures?”. Well, this is such a normal thought!

We have all felt awkward in photos, at least once in our life! We feel like we are being judged or that we do not look good enough! Well, couple sessions and family portrait sessions are so much more than how you look - they are all about capturing precious memories to look back on forever.

So, from my experience, here is how to not feel awkward in photos…

6 Ways To Not Feel Awkward In Photos

  • The Truth

  • I Help You Feel More Comfortable

  • Focus On Your Partner/Loved ones

  • Relax Before Your Shoot

  • Plan a Date For After Your Shoot

  • Communicate!

The Truth

The real truth here is you will feel awkward in photos - it is totally normal! From my experience as a photographer, my clients only end up feeling awkward for the first few minutes, then it wears off!

This is simply because they realise, it is not as scary as they imagine, they realise they are there connecting with their family and capturing special memories and because as the photographer I encourage them and become their friend during the couple session or family portrait session.

I Help You Feel More Comfortable

Following on from the last point, as a photographer I will help you feel more comfortable. If I do say so myself, I am a pro at this! I work with families all the time and I am a professional at what I do, so I know how to encourage, empower and help my clients feel confident.

I will get to know you and your family, ask questions, get laughing and just be a friend during the whole session so you feel and look as relaxed and natural as possible.

Focus On Your Partner or Loved Ones

A great way to not feel awkward in photos is to focus on your partner or your children. Look at their face instead of the camera and think about how much you adore their face and all of the inside jokes that will get you smirking and giggling!

Relax Before Your Shoot

Self-care is super important to help you feel relaxed which will lead to helping you not feel awkward in photos.

You can do this by taking some time to yourself to do what makes you feel good and relaxed! Take a trip to the spa and get a massage or a facial. Or, have a hot bubble bath the night before your family portrait session, with a glass of your favourite tipple and your favourite Netflix show or book.

The more time you spend thinking about how to not feel awkward in photos, the more you will stress about it unnecessarily - leading to feeling more awkward!

Plan a Date For After Your Shoot

Get through your session by treating yourself afterwards. You could plan a date for your shoot which could be anything you and your family love doing together. Whether it is a cinema date or a meal at your favourite restaurant. You deserve it!

Communicate!

My biggest tip to help you not feel awkward in photos is to communicate with your photographer!

Be sure to let me know how comfortable you are with PDA before our session if you are having a couples shoot so that I can plan and help pose you accordingly.

Not everyone likes to kiss on camera, but if you do want these cute photos, I have some awesome natural-looking poses, that will not make you feel awkward in photos!
