After all, what could be better than blue skies, warm temperatures, and a beautiful summer celebration surrounded by the people you love?

Why sunshine isn’t always Best

As a wedding photographer based in Suffolk, bright sunshine is often one of the most challenging wedding weather conditions of all. Before you panic, this doesn’t mean a sunny wedding day is a bad thing. It simply means it helps to know what to expect so you can stay comfortable, look after your guests, and enjoy your day no matter what the forecast decides to do. I’ve learned that Suffolk is actually in the driest region of the UK as well, so we have less rain than other regions which makes this a really important thing to think about when you’re planning your wedding in Suffolk.

The Biggest Challenge Isn’t The Photos

When people think about hot weather, they often think about photographs first.

Honestly, my biggest concern is usually the couple.

Wedding dresses, suits, waistcoats, formal shoes, outdoor ceremonies, and busy dance floors can become surprisingly uncomfortable when temperatures climb into the high twenties or thirties. Add in nerves, excitement, and a packed wedding morning, and it doesn’t take long before people start feeling the heat.

I’ve photographed weddings where couples were far more affected by the temperature than they would have been by a passing rain shower. A little rain might require a change of plans for twenty minutes. A heatwave can affect how comfortable you feel for the entire day.

Don’t Forget About Your Guests And Venue

One thing that often gets overlooked when couples are dreaming of a sunny wedding day is guest comfort.

Unlike many countries, air conditioning isn’t particularly common in the UK. Older manor houses, barns, and historic venues can become surprisingly warm during a heatwave, especially when they’re filled with guests.

When you’re visiting venues, it’s worth asking what plans they have in place for extreme weather. Most couples remember to ask about rainy day backup options, but very few think to ask about hot weather plans.

Do they have shaded outdoor spaces? Can outdoor ceremonies be moved if temperatures become uncomfortable? Are there areas where guests can cool down throughout the day? Is water easily available?

These small details can make a huge difference to the experience of both you and your guests.

You may also want to consider providing a few thoughtful touches if hot weather is forecast. Baskets of handheld fans, chilled water stations, bottles of sun cream, and plenty of shaded seating can all be greatly appreciated, particularly during outdoor ceremonies and drinks receptions.

This is especially important if you have elderly relatives, babies, young children, or guests who may struggle in high temperatures. While a sunny forecast sounds wonderful in theory, being able to keep everyone comfortable is often what makes the day enjoyable in practice.

Bright Sunshine Isn’t Always The Most Flattering Light

This is the part that surprises most couples.

The most flattering light isn’t usually the brightest light.

When the sun is directly overhead, it can create strong shadows under eyes, harsh highlights on skin, and lots of squinting. It’s also much harder for everyone to keep their eyes open when they’re standing in full sun during family photos.

This doesn’t mean we can’t create beautiful photographs. We absolutely can. It simply means your photographer will often be looking for open shade, softer light, or planning portraits for later in the day when the sun is lower in the sky.

Why Rain Is Often Easier Than Couples Expect

Most couples worry far more about rain than they do about heat.

The reality is that rain usually affects only small parts of the day. Most venues already have wet weather plans in place, and a little flexibility is often all that’s needed.

Some of my favourite wedding photographs have happened on rainy days. Couples slow down, stay close together, and focus on what really matters.

The weather becomes part of the story rather than something that ruins it.

My Favourite Wedding Weather

If I’m completely honest, my favourite wedding weather is neither blazing sunshine nor heavy rain.

It’s a mild day with a mixture of light cloud and sunshine.

Cloud cover acts like a giant natural softbox, creating beautiful even light, while comfortable temperatures mean couples and guests can relax and enjoy themselves without worrying about overheating.

It’s not quite the answer most couples expect, but it’s often the weather that allows everyone to be most present throughout the day.

If a heatwave is forecast for your wedding day, here are a few simple things that can make a huge difference:

• Provide plenty of cold drinking water throughout the day
• Offer handheld fans for guests during outdoor ceremonies
• Have sun cream available in bathrooms or welcome areas
• Check whether your venue has shaded outdoor spaces
• Ask about hot weather contingency plans as well as rainy day plans
• Consider elderly guests, babies, and young children when planning outdoor activities
• Build a little extra flexibility into your timeline
• Keep touch up makeup and blotting paper nearby
• Plan couple portraits for cooler parts of the day where possible
• Wear comfortable footwear if you’ll be walking between locations

The truth is that no wedding day is ever perfect on paper.
