If you’re here, there’s a good chance you’ve been dreaming about meeting your little one, scrolling through Pinterest for nursery inspiration, and wondering when the best time might be to capture this season before it slips by.
You may even have found yourself typing “when should you book maternity photos?” into Google.
It’s one of the most common questions I get from expectant mums, and it’s a good one to ask.
The timing of your maternity session can make a big difference in how comfortable you feel and how your photographs look. While every pregnancy is different, there is a stage that tends to work beautifully for most mums, allowing you to celebrate your growing bump while still feeling relaxed enough to enjoy the experience.
The Best Time for Maternity Photos

For most mums, I recommend scheduling maternity photos between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy.
During this stage, your bump is usually beautifully visible, but you’re often still comfortable enough to enjoy walking, moving around, and spending time outdoors during your session.
Many mums find they still have enough energy to feel present and relaxed while also having that lovely round bump that photographs so beautifully.
Of course, every pregnancy is different.
Some mums carry smaller and may prefer to wait a little longer. Others may be expecting twins or experiencing discomfort and prefer an earlier session.
Why Booking Your Maternity Photos Too Late Can Be Risky

I completely understand wanting to wait until your bump feels bigger.
However, there is one thing I always encourage families to keep in mind.
Babies don’t always follow the schedule.
As you move later into pregnancy, there’s a greater chance of feeling uncomfortable, experiencing swelling, or simply having less energy than you expected.
Occasionally, babies also decide to make an early appearance.
If you’re wondering when should you book maternity photos in Suffolk, I generally recommend planning your session between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy.
What If I’m Not Feeling Confident?

This is another concern I hear all the time.
Pregnancy is beautiful, but it can also feel incredibly vulnerable.
Your body is changing, your clothes may not fit the way they used to, you may not feel like yourself some days.
Please know that these feelings are completely normal.
One of the reasons I love maternity photography so much is because it gives mums the opportunity to slow down and see themselves through a different lens.
You do not need to look a certain way, or need to know how to pose. You simply need to show up.
The rest is my job.
Many of my maternity clients also find that preparing emotionally for birth helps them feel more confident throughout pregnancy. If you’re looking for additional support, I highly recommend working with a local hypnobirthing teacher. Learning breathing techniques, relaxation tools, and ways to build confidence before birth can make such a positive difference.
Can My Partner and Children Join?

Absolutely.
In fact, I encourage it.
Maternity photos are about so much more than a bump. They tell the story of a growing family.
Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, including your partner and children often creates some of the most meaningful images from the session.
The cuddles, excitement, and anticipation are all part of the story.
Indoor or Outdoor Maternity Photos?

This comes down to personal preference.
Outdoor sessions are perfect if you love natural light, open spaces, and a relaxed feel.
They work beautifully during golden hour and allow plenty of room for movement and connection.
Indoor sessions can feel cosy, intimate, and deeply personal, especially when photographed in your own home. There is no right or wrong choice.
The best location is the one that feels most like you.
How Far in Advance Should You Book Maternity Photos?

I recommend reaching out during your second trimester whenever possible.
This gives you the best chance of securing your preferred date and allows us plenty of time to plan your session together.
The earlier you book, the more flexibility you’ll have.
